After recently trying 4DX at Event Cinemas, I decided it was only fair to see how D-BOX at HOYTS Norwood compared.
If you’ve never heard of D-BOX, think of it as the calmer cousin of 4DX. Instead of water sprays, flashing lights, wind effects, and all the other extras that come with 4DX, the D-BOX seats move and respond to what’s happening on screen. The seats also recline, which immediately makes the experience feel a little more comfortable and relaxed.
One feature was that you can control the intensity of the movement yourself. If you want a more subtle experience, you can turn it down. If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, you can increase the motion level. It gives you much more control over the experience than 4DX.
After trying both, I’d say they cater to slightly different audiences.
4DX at Event Cinemas
- Bigger seat movements
- Water, wind, flashing lights, and other environmental effects
- Feels more like a theme park ride
- Best for action-packed blockbusters
- Much more intense overall
- Some movies have 3D option along with 4DX
D-BOX at HOYTS Norwood
- Motion seats only
- Reclining seats for added comfort
- Adjustable intensity settings
- More immersive than a standard cinema without being overwhelming
- Great if you want a comfortable upgrade to a regular movie screening
Whilst I am a trill seeker I preferred the event cinema experience, but neither experience is necessarily better than the other, they’re just different.
If you’re someone who loves full sensory immersion and doesn’t mind getting sprayed with water during a chase scene, 4DX is probably the way to go. But if you want something that enhances the movie without feeling like you’re on a rollercoaster, D-BOX is a fantastic middle ground.
Check out my post on Event Cinema to decide for yourself which is better.
